SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 23-year-old man is hospitalized with gunshot wounds suffered when someone opened fire on the vehicle he was riding in as it traveled on Interstate 81 in Syracuse.

Police say officers responded around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to Upstate University Hospital where a man had arrived in a private vehicle after being shot twice in the chest.

Officials say the man was in a vehicle traveling north on I-81 in downtown Syracuse when another vehicle drove alongside and someone opened fire, hitting the man's vehicle several times.

Police say the wounded man is listed in serious condition but is expected to survive.
