BATH, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a registered sex offender is back in jail after he tried to elude police by jumping into an upstate New York river following reports that he had sexually assaulted a child.

Police in the Steuben County village of Bath say they received a report Wednesday that 36-year-old Brett Swick had sexual contact with a 7-year-old. When officers arrived at his home in Bath, Swick fled on foot and went into the Cohocton River.

Members of an emergency water rescue team found him early Thursday morning in chest-deep water. Swick was taken to a Rochester hospital for treatment of his injuries.

He was charged with predatory sexual assault against a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

Swick is being held in the county jail without bail. It couldn't be determined if he has a lawyer.
