A Cortland school is a little calmer today after being put on lockdown May 23.  Saint Mary’s School was locked down as sheriff’s deputies and New York State Police searched a Charles Street apartment.

As authorities arrived, 34-year-old Aziz Karim Hicks of Stone Mountain, Georgia reportedly jumped out of a second floor window and ran off, but was apprehended within minutes.

Officials seized a loaded .9 mm semi-automatic handgun, money, a quarter ounce of crack cocaine, prescription drugs, paraphernalia and packaging material.

Authorities are still looking for a second suspect in the drug activity investigation, who was not in the apartment at the time and more arrests are anticipated.

Hicks is charged with two felony counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon, misdemeanor criminal possession of drug paraphernalia and a violation of unlawful possession of marijuana.

He was sent to the Cortland County Jail without bail.

Authorities say at no time was anyone at the school in danger but given the timing of the serving of the warrant and the close proximity of the apartment to the school, Saint Mary’s was contacted prior to police action and put on lockdown as a precaution.
