Utica firefighters and Hazmat crews were called to the 1100 block of Orchard Street in West Utica Thursday morning for a potential hazmat situation.

Utica Police Lt. Brian Coromato says firefighters had responded to the home for a possible suicide attempt by a woman.  Coromato says it was learned she had taken a substance that could potentially be hazardous if other people were exposed to it.

Coromato says the woman was taken to the hospital.

He says the substance was contained to the residence.

Fire officials are still trying to determine what the substance was. State Fire investigators are assisting the UFD with the investigation.

The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for treatment.

Mohawk Valley Health System says the woman ingested a powder-like substance that was determined to be plant-based.

They say hospital officials initially took exposure precautions while treating the patient and once the substance was identified, it was determined there was no risk to providers or staff.
