Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the 2016 Regional Economic Development Council Awards in Albany on Thursday.

The Mohawk Valley REDC, which includes the Utica-Rome area, was named a Top Performer.  The Council will receive $81.9 million supporting 88 projects.

Ten regions competed for over $700 million in economic development funding.

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi issued the following statement on the Mohawk Valley being named a Top Performer:

“The hard work and collaboration by members of the Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Council has led to its selection as a ‘top performer’ by Empire State Development Corporation.  This year’s regional plan—‘Cool Places. Smart People’ emphasizes projects that promote the continued revitalization of downtown Utica and the region as a whole, as well as training our workforce to meet local employers’ current and future needs.  These projects are designed to have an economic spinoff effect, creating or keeping nearly 5,000 jobs, with a 20 to 1 return on investment.  Congratulations to all who worked with the Regional Council on this plan, as well as the companies and agencies working to implement it.”

State Senator Joseph Griffo offered the following statement concerning Thursday’s announcement of the Regional Economic Development Council awards:

It is great news for our region that the Mohawk Valley has been awarded $81.9 million today as a Top Performer through the Regional Economic Development Council. This award and special recognition reflects how committed all the members of the REDC are to achieving the goals that will continue to revitalize our region. Not only will this investment in our ideas help the Mohawk Valley seize upon the unique economic opportunities we have for growth, jobs and stability, but it will also further fuel the positive vision we need to achieve our true potential. We are grateful for this investment, and I look forward to the progress that will continue to transform the Mohawk Valley for the better.
