Governor Andrew Cuomo has formally requested that President Obama issue a major disaster declaration for the State of New York following last week's severe storms and major flooding.

Cuomo had previously declared a disaster emergency in 15 counties, including Oneida, Herkimer and Madison.

More than 13,000  people were without power at the height of the storm and one person was swept away by flood waters and is presumed dead.
