Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed landmark legislation to combat the heroin and opioid crisis in New York State.

Cuomo signed a package of bills today that lawmakers in Albany agreed upon last week.

The legislation limits opioid prescriptions from 30 to seven days, and requires mandatory prescriber education on pain management.

The deal also expands support for New Yorkers in recovery, increasing treatment beds by nearly 300 and expanding program slots for substance use disorder by more than 2,000 in New York.

“New York is leading the way forward in the fight against heroin and opioid addiction, and with this legislation, we are taking an affirmative stand for our families and communities who have suffered from this epidemic’s debilitating effects,” Governor Cuomo said. "
