ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is promising to sue the federal government if the Trump administration follows through on a plan to block funding for health providers who refer patients for abortions.

The Democrat laid out the legal threat in a letter to federal health officials on Monday.

Cuomo says Trump's plan could leave many women without information needed to make their own medical decisions. He says the new rule, if formally adopted, would unfairly restrict rights of medical professionals and patients.

A new federal regulation proposed this year would overhaul the family-planning program known as Title X, including banning clinics from sharing space and financial resources with abortion providers. Providers such as Planned Parenthood could be forced out.

There's no immediate response to the letter by officials in Washington.
