Governor Cuomo is warning New Yorkers about the growing trend of child identity theft.

Cuomo says the victims may not discover their identities have been stolen until they begin to apply for loans, credit cards accounts or rent their first apartments.

He's urging parents to be proactive in their efforts to protect their child's identities and personal information.

The New York Department of State has a Consumer Guide to Identity Theft available here..

In March, Carnegie Melon's Cy Lab reported that children are 51 times more likely than adults to be victims of identity theft.
