Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Broome County District Attorney Steven Cornwell calls a sentence of a third of what he had sought for a teen who brutally raped a UHS Wilson Hospital nurse in April of 2016 “shocking.”  Cornwell had asked for a minimum of 30 years in prison since life without parole and the death penalty were not options.

Broome County Judge Joseph Cawley rejected a juvenile offender status request for 17 year old Brandon Corey and sentenced him as an adult to ten years in prison, probation and required him to register as a sex offender.  Cornwell said Corey should never have been allowed to see the light of day again after ruining the woman’s life.  Cornwell said the nurse relives the attack constantly.

Corey’s attorney said the youth had been abused and began using drugs at an even younger age.

Corey was sentenced to ten years for first degree robbery, and ten years for three counts of second degree robbery, ten years for rape, ten years for criminal sexual act, five years for sexual abuse and one year for criminal mischief with Judge Cawley saying the sentences will run concurrently, including the orders of probation that range from five to 20 years.
