Mike D'Antoni abruptly resigned as coach of the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

The team is in the midst of a six-game losing streak and has fallen into a tie for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. D'Antoni's Knicks had just a 121-167 record, but last year the team did make it to the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons.

Team officials say the split was mutual and based on a disagreement regarding the future of the Knicks. Various reports in recent weeks indicated that there may be a rift between the coach and Carmelo Anthony.

Mike Woodson, an assistant under D'Antoni, is taking over the coach duties on an interim basis.

New York hosts Portland tonight at MSG.
