EAST ATLANTIC BEACH, N.Y. (AP) — A deceased humpback whale has washed ashore on a frigid Long Island beach.

The 31-foot-long whale was discovered at around 7 a.m. Saturday in East Atlantic Beach, a hamlet on Long Beach Barrier Island.

State and local officials were working with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society to come up with a plan for disposing of the carcass.

An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.

The president of the nonprofit group Gotham Whale told Newsday the whale probably weighed 30 tons.
