Utica, NY (WIBX) - Officers with the Department of Environmental Conservation ticketed 45 people from Oneida and Herkimer counties for illegal deer shooting during the past big game season.

According to the DEC, 30 people from Oneida county, and 15 from Herkimer County, were ticketed for illegal practices, including possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle, failing to tag deer correctly and trespassing.

Environmental Conservation Officers were also looking for anyone using artificial light to shoot deer, a practice known as "deerjacking."

"Deerjacking" occurs at night, during times when deer are feeding. The animals freeze when they see the light, making them easier to shoot.

Officials urge anyone witnessing illegal hunting practices to call their local conservation officer's phone number, listed in their hunting guide. They can also call the Department's 24 hour dispatch line at 1-877-457-5680.
