The Department of Environmental Conservation says more than 800,000 days are spent ice fishing New York's waters.

With ice Fishing season here, the DEC is reminding anglers that three to four inches of solid ice is usually safe, but be sure to check thickness with an auger to be completely sure of your safety.

The DEC also says ice thickness can vary on every body of water and the presence of snowmobile tracks or footprints on the ice does not mean it is safe.
