Albany, NY (WIBX) - To help protect homes and camps from wildfires, DEC Forest Rangers are working with the New York Firewise Council and national Firewise communities to educate residents about fire prevention.

According to the group, many wildland fires are created by people, through unattended campfires, brush burning and other means.

Once a fire is started, homeowners may be at risk. To keep fires from causing extensive damage, the DEC suggests using nonflammable materials for outer walls and roofs to buildings, and to use double-paned windows.

When landscaping, keep the area clear of flammable debris and store firewood and propane tanks away from your home.
