NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — Police in the city of Niagara Falls say the death of a man whose decaying body was found earlier this week in a wooded area was a homicide.

Police Superintendent Bryan Dalporto says the body was discovered in an overgrown area behind Cataract Steel around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Visual identification of the body isn't possible given its condition. Police say the body was decomposed to the point where fingerprints couldn't be obtained.

Dalporto says the victim appears to be a white man whose body had been there for some time. An autopsy conducted at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo showed that the victim died of multiple stab wounds.

Police have identified a person of interest in the killing.
