State Police say a trooper shot a man in the stomach after he allegedly came at the trooper with a large knife.

The officer went to the home after a 911 call was received about a disturbance at the home at approximately 11:28pm on Saturday, April 26, 2014.

When police arrived at the home located at 371 Mill Street in West Winfield the trooper was allegedly confronted by 32-year old David A. Pope in the side yard.  Police say Pope "charged at the trooper wielding a large knife."  The trooper fired a .45 caliber shot which struck Pope in the stomach.

Pope was brought to Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica where, as of this posting, he was in critical condition following surgery.

As is routine with all incidents where a weapon is discharged by law enforcement, the District Attorney is investigating.  Charges against Pope are pending.

State Police have not yet released the name of the trooper involved.
