DOD To Reconsider Women’s Roles in Military

(WIBX) -  The Department of Defense is recommending that Congress pass legislation allowing women to serve closer to combat.

While new rules are expected to continue the prohibition that prevents women from serving on the front lines, the Pentagon is expected to “catch up with reality,” and recommend that women be formally allowed to serve
in other jobs at the battalion level, which have previously been considered “too close to combat.”

Current crises have already put thousands of women on the front lines.  More than 150 have been killed serving as intelligence officers, military police, and medics.   Current rules allow women to do the work, but not get credit for, combat operations consisting of fewer than 800 soldiers.

The new rules are expected to result in more promotional opportunities for women serving in the armed forces.
