This summer the New York State Police is honoring a K9 member of the force along with the fallen trooper for whom the dog is named.

K9 Ash, stationed with his handler in Albany, is trained in narcotics detection and tracking.

Ash is named after Trooper Paul Ashburn who was hit and killed instantly by a truck while conducting what was a routine traffic stop on the Thruway south of Albany on July 26, 1983.

Trooper Ashburn has served with the State Police for just about four years when he was killed.
