Each day the New York State Police is honoring a K9 member of the force along with the fallen trooper for whom the dog is named.

"Wink" is a female German Shepard trained in narcotics detection.  She and her handler are station at the Montgomery barracks.
Wink is named for fallen Trooper Winston I. Martindale.  Trooper Martindale was 40-years old when he died on July 24, 2013 after being injured at the scene of a plane crash in Wawayanda more than two years earlier.
While Martindale was trying to rescue two pilots on May 9, 2011 from the wreckage of two planes that had crashed when he fell onto a piece of equipment and sustained internal injuries.  He continued to work to free the pilots and did not learn until later how seriously he was injured.
In addition to serving as a Trooper, Martindale was a veteran of the United States Army.  He was a seven-year veteran of the New York State Police, stationed at New Hampton.
