BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police say downed power lines have closed a northern section of the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 near the Canadian border.

Troopers say Wednesday morning that the downed lines are blocking the southbound side of the highway near a rest area in Beekmantown, between the Canadian border and the city of Plattsburgh.

Police say all southbound traffic is being diverted through the rest area until the power lines are cleared.

The stretch of I-87 between Albany and Quebec is also known as the Adirondack Northway.

The power lines fell after parts of northern New York received up to a foot of wet, heavy snow Tuesday, with more snow expected Wednesday.
