SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) — A driver is dead after a traffic stop and foot chase ended in his arrest by police in upstate New York.

The Schenectady Police Department says the driver, whose name is being withheld until next of kin are notified, complained of breathing difficulties and dizziness while in the back seat of a police car on the way to the police station.

The Times-Union of Albany reports (http://bit.ly/2q7Wng3 ) that by the time the police car arrived at the station Thursday afternoon, the man was unresponsive. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver, who was stopped for a traffic violation and ran into a backyard in an escape attempt, displayed no signs of distress prior to complaining about breathing problems in the police car.
