PHOENICIA, N.Y. (AP) — Dry weather has prompted state officials to temporarily ban fishing along a section of the Upper Esopus Creek in the Catskills.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation issued emergency regulations Friday prohibiting fishing along a 12-mile section of the Esopus Creek running from the Shandaken Tunnel inlet down to the Ashokan Reservoir.

The prohibition also covers the adjoining portion of Ashokan downstream to where Traver Hollow Stream enters the reservoir.

State officials say the prohibition will remain in effect until Jan. 31 to protect trout and other fish in the low-flowing creek.
