Hundreds of thousands have signed a petition to name a talk show host a moderator of one of the 2016 presidential debates.

Comedian Jon Stewart has been nominated, by the people, to take on the very serious role.

The Change.org petition was started by Mariel Waters of Stanhope, New Jersey on August 6, 2015, the day that Stewart bid farewell to the audience of his "The Daily Show." Stewart hosted the show for sixteen years and paved the way for Trevor Noah to take control of the reins on September 28, 2015.

Waters has convinced hundreds of thousands, including many of Stewart's colleagues, to take up the charge as well.  In her petition Waters says, "Mr. Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the United States Cabinet, 32 members of the United States Senate, 7 members of the United States House of Representatives, and scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news."

Some would argue that Stewart's credentials - which include hosting the WWE's "SummerSlam", to which he will return as host tomorrow at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York - make him uniquely qualified to take on the debates.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has yet to formally respond to the petition.
