Erie Canal Set To Open Additional Stretches
Albany, NY (WIBX) -Two additional stretches of the Erie Canal will open to navigation starting Saturday morning at 7:00.
The State Canal Corporation says a 153-mile long section from Waterford in Saratoga County to Brewerton in Onondoga County and a 51-mile section from Clyde in Wayne County to the Genesee River in Rochester will open to boaters.
A 77-mile long section of the Canal between Rochester and Tonawanda has been open since May 1st.
Canal Corporation officials say persistent high waters and excessive currents from recent heavy rain has delayed the opening of other parts of the Canal system.
Water conditions are being re-evaluated daily and crews are hoping to have all of the 524-mile Canal system open beofore Memorial Day weekend.
