Additional Information

The AmeriCorps Self-Sufficiency Housing Resource Center at the Utica Municipal Housing Authority and community partners will sponsor a free construction career fair for City of Utica residents on Thursday, August 18th 4PM - 8PM at the Mohawk Valley Community College thINCubator, 326 Broad Street, Utica. Admission is free.

The Career Fair will be held Thursday, August 18 between 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Friday, August 19 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Persons need to attend only one of the two dates. Refreshments, giveaways, construction training demonstrations, information, and interviews will be offered to participants.

Utica residents seeking training or jobs in the construction industry are invited to attend. The construction fair will help local developers and contractors find persons interested in working on affordable housing and other commercial and residential projects in the community. Construction companies throughout the United States are facing a shortage of trained workers needed for both residential and commercial projects.

In addition, the fair is an effort of the Utica Municipal Housing Authority HUD Section 3 Initiative to identify residents interested in construction training, apprenticeship programs, and employment related to the Roosevelt Residences Project. Located in the Cornhill neighborhood of Utica, the Project will be located across eleven (11) scattered sites and will consist of twenty-five (25) buildings housing fifty (50) units of affordable housing. Various opportunities in certain construction trades could start as soon as the spring of 2017.

The fair is a collaborative effort of the Housing Authority, City of Utica, Norstar Development USA, Oneida County Workforce Development, Workforce Development Board, Mohawk Valley Community College, Central New York Labor Council, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, BOCES Consortium of Continuing Education, Rescue Mission of Utica, and other partners to connect residents interested in construction employment with local training programs and employers. Local construction training programs are offered at Mohawk Valley Community College, BOCES Consortium of Continuing Education, Workforce Development Board, local unions, and the Rescue Mission of Utica Skills for Success program.

No appointments are necessary. Persons are encouraged to bring their resumes. Attendees can learn about construction training programs and can discuss career paths and future opportunities with the participating companies. Area construction companies can participate in the job fair by contacting Michael Williams at 735-5246 ext. 25 (cnyhirc@gmail.com) or John Furman at 315-982-3731 (jfurman@uticamha.org).
