Friends, neighbors and cancer survivors are coming together for an energizing celebration to kick off the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Madison County and unveil the highlights and changes planned for this year's event. Anyone interested in getting involved in or learning more about Relay For Life is encouraged to attend.

The kickoff celebration for the annual Relay For Life of Madison County will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 4th, at The Costello Transportation Building on Freedom Drive in Oneida. In addition to learning about how the American Cancer Society saves lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back, guests will be treated to refreshments, have an opportunity to win prizes and hear from cancer survivors and caregivers.

"Relay For Life is a fun, family focused event where the community comes together in the fight against cancer," said Jen Albaugh, longtime Relay For Life participant and past chairperson. "The American Cancer Society funds powerful research and inspiring programs for cancer patients and survivors. Those funds come from Relays that take place all over the world. Although the money we raise does not necessarily stay local, local cancer patients and survivors can benefit from all of the programs and research ACS offers. Our goal is that someday we will be able to eliminate this disease forever."

Relay For Life is an overnight event where teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families build awareness and raise funds - before and at the event - to fight cancer. The event is held overnight to signify that cancer never sleeps and those affected with cancer must deal with it 24 hours a day.

This year's American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Madison County will be held from 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30th, to 7 a.m., Sunday, May 31st at the Oneida High School Track. Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, secure community support, assist with publicity and plan entertainment activities for this exciting and energizing event, which celebrates cancer survivors while honoring those in the community who lost their battle with cancer.

For more information on the kickoff celebration, contact Amy Kotwica at the American Cancer Society at (315) 433-5623 or visit www.relayforlife.org/madisoncountyny. Teams may register online anytime and those that enter from now until the Kickoff will be entered into a drawing for a prize at Kickoff.
