Utica, NY (WIBX) - Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield wants to increase its rates.

Officials are asking the State Department of Insurance to approve the increases in order to cover the rising costs of health care.

The rate increases would range from 10 to 14 percent for the most commonly held insurance plans.

Some plans would see an increase of up to 19 percent.

Excellus says the rate increases will affect around 75,000 of its 700,000 members in central New York.

The rate hikes would go into effect next January.
