Little is known about an incident on Genesee Street in South Utica on Saturday, but a bicycle may provide a clue.

Utica Police have not released official information about the incident but a witness says she saw what she thought was a theft in progress.  Another says she tried to help police by chasing - first with her car and then on foot - a youth who may have been involved before she ended up in an accident of her own.  A third potential witness, a young man walking along Genesee Street at the time of the incident, told WIBX that he did not see anything.

What is known is that police were chasing several youths, some on bicycles, in a northerly direction near Beverly Place on Genesee Street toward Our Lady of Lourdes toward Barton Avenue at approximately 7:19pm on August 1, 2015.

At least two youths dropped their bicycles on lawns in front of separate homes before they ran off.  Both were pursued by police and witnesses.

A backpack, initially presumed to belong to one of the boys in the group, was left near shrubbery.

Anyone who may have information on the incident, on who knows to whom the bicycle pictured in this posting belongs, is asked to call Utica Police at: (315) 223.3510.

An officer at the scene asked residents of the area to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.  Eyewitness information is appreciated by authorities but officials say members of the public should not pursue suspects on their own and should instead call police immediately.
