New York State Police are investigating a fatal accident in Otsego County.

At around 7:30 a.m. April 16, 2015authorities responded to call about a vehicle off the road on U.S. Route 20 in the Town of Richfield in an area commonly known as  Brighton Corners.

Investigators say an eastbound car drifted to the southbound shoulder, hit a guiderail and became airborne.  The car rolled over and ended up partially submerged on the passenger side in two feet of water in a creek.

The woman passenger was able to climb out and get to the roadway to flag down help but the female driver was found dead in the car.

The passenger was taken to Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown with bruises and a broken leg.

The names of the women have not been released.

UPDATED 4/17 1:11 p.m.- State Police have released the names of the victims in Thursday's fatal motor vehicle accident on Route 20 in the Town of  Richfield

They say the driver of the vehicle, 20-year old Kaitlin Mercer of Huntington, Massachusetts, was killed in the crash. An autopsy is pending.

A passenger in the vehicle, 22-year old Amanda Conley of Brattleboro, Vermont, was taken to Bassett Medical Center with a broken leg and bruises.

Police says the two were coming from a visit to Niagara Falls and were headed to Vermont when the accident occurred.

The accident remains under investigation.
