Van Buren, NY (WIBX) - A 20-year-old driver was killed in a head-on collision  in Onondaga County while trying to pass a tractor trailer on Tuesday morning, according state police.

Joshua Menkins, of Pheonix, NY, was traveling southbound on Route 31 in the town of Van Buren at around around 6:30 a.m. in a pickup truck and while attempting to pass the rig, struck a pickup truck going northbound head-on, police said.

Menkins was pronounced dead at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

The driver of the second truck, Frederick Wilhelm Jr. - of Warners, NY - suffered multiple leg fractures and internal injuries. His injuries are not considered life threatening, police said.

The accident investigation is ongoing.
