First guests check into newly renovated Hotel Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The first guests have checked into a downtown Syracuse hotel that reopened following a $70 million face-lift.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports (http://bit.ly/28Xnh1Y ) a Stickley Furniture salesman from Tennessee was the first guest to check in Wednesday at the Hotel Syracuse.

The hotel closed in 2004, 80 years after it opened. The property was bought two years ago by Ed Riley, who will operate the 260-room hotel as a Marriott later this summer. The hotel's name officially will be changed to Marriott Syracuse Downtown.

Only people attending private events at the hotel can book rooms. Rooms are expected to be available for the general public in August.

The hotel's renovations included uncovering a 40-foot 1940s mural located behind the reception desk and restoring 92-year-old chandeliers in the grand lobby.
