New Hartford, NY (WIBX) - New Hartford police have officially filed charges against five people in connection with a brawl at the Applewood Community that started over text messages regarding a child custody issue, police said.

Police say 35-year-old Christine Zammiello and 64-year-old Nancy Cehonski used a metal carpenters level and a shovel during the fight. Each faces several charges including felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Matthew Zanichelli, 39, of Utica and Jodi Colburn, 47, of Rome suffered lacerations to the head after police say they were repeatedly hit with those weapons. For their role in the altercation, each is charged with riot, which is a misdemeanor. Zanichelli and Colburn both received staples to close the wounds to their heads, police said.

Another man, 40-year-old Scott Goodson, was also charged with riot.

Authorities have completed their investigation into the incident which occured last Friday afternoon.

The Kirkland Police Department responded and assisted at the scene.
