The New York State Department of Transportation says it is looking to improve traffic flow with the use of flashing yellow arrows at some busy intersections.

The first signals in the state were put in six years ago at intersections on Front Street, Court Street, Brandywine Avenue, North Shore Drive and Washington Street in Binghamton.

The DOT says the flashing yellow arrow phase lights are used at intersections where there is an exclusive right or left turn lane with a protected green arrow that stops on-coming traffic. The flashing yellow arrow, meanwhile, allows motorists another opportunity to make their turn when traffic allows.

In addition to the first signals in Binghamton, other flashing yellow arrow systems have been installed in Vestal, Kirkwood and Owego as well as other locations around New York State.
