Fort Plain Woman Killed, Five Injured In Accident In Herkimer

A Fort Plain woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident on Route 5 near the Herkimer Wal-Mart on Monday morning.

Herkimer Police say 67-year old Gloria Carpenter had to be extricated from the mini-van. She later died at the hospital.

Five passengers were in the vehicle, three adults and two children, were all taken to the hospital.

Police say both children were released from the hospital with minor injuries. They credit the use of child restraint seats with preventing more serious injuries.

Witnesses told police they saw the mini-van traveling through the front of the Wal Mart parking lot at a high rate speed before the accident,  The accident remains under investigation.
