Fort To Display Rare Revolutionary War Officer’s Medal

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP) — A rare medal made for members of an American fraternal organization of Revolutionary War officers is going on display at Fort Ticonderoga.

Officials at the historic site and tourist attraction in upstate New York say an original Society of the Cincinnati gold eagle medal will be displayed starting July 4.

The medal is one of two surviving examples out of the 140 made in France in 1783 for members of the organization founded that same year by officers who served in Gen. George Washington's Continental Army.

Members included Washington himself and fellow Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

The medal was owned by Capt. Richard Douglass of Connecticut. Fort officials say it's on loan from a private collection of 18th-century military artifacts that's considered one of the most extensive in North America.
