We know it can be tough to think about outdoor adventures during the winter, but this list has some of the best places to get out and play in the snow.

So break out the winter boots and scarves, grab a hot chocolate and head out for some of the best winter fun New York has to offer.

Lake Placid

Just taking in the cozy feel of Lake Placid is reason enough to visit in the winter. But if you need more excuses check out the Winter Olympic Village where you can ride a real bobsled. Or just take a relaxing skate around the lake. Plus Whiteface Mountain is just a short drive away. And of course don't forget to explore the hiking and cross-country ski trails.

Long Lake

One of the best kept secrets of New York's North Country. If you like the feel of being away from it all, Long Lake is for you. Plenty of hiking trails to explore and cozy general stores will fill a weekend.

Ellicottville

This little resort town transforms into a winter wonderland every year. The Holiday valley Resort is a must, and you can also explore the Sky High Adventure Park, wineries, chocolate shops and even a salt cave spa!

Lake George

Expedia.com has called Lake George one of America's Coziest Mountain towns for a reason. During the winter Lake George is a magical place, with short hikes that take you to beautiful views of the lake and a Main Street that will keep you busy for hours.

So instead of hibernating all winter long, get out and explore the Empire State.
