AAA is predicting that 36 million people will be hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, a nearly three percent increase over last year.

Ed Welsh of AAA Central New York says one of the reasons for the increase is cheaper gas prices.

He says even though gas prices have increased in the last few weeks, they're still about 30 cents a gallon less than they were last year at this time.

The average price in the Utica-Rome area is $2.26 a gallon.  Welsh says he expects gas prices to fall below $2 a gallon by October.

Governor Cuomo has ordered road and bridge construction projects on New York highways be suspended through Tuesday to help ease traffic.
