Utica, NY (WIBX) - Just in time for the long Labor Day weekend, motorists are facing an unwelcome spike in gas prices.

AAA's Ed Welsh says the average price in the Utica-Rome market is $3.98 a gallon,  the highest they've ever been for a Labor Day weekend.

And Welsh says the effects of Hurricane Isaac could push prices higher by about 20 cents a gallon over the next two weeks.

He says there is some good news though.

Gas prices should start to go down as refineries begin the switch from summer to winter fuel blends.

Meanwhile, 33 million Americans will take trips of 50 miles or more from home this weekend, a nearly 3% increase over last year.
