New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is hoping to help college students with their education loans.

Gillibrand is proposing new legislation that would let students and graduates refinance their federal Stafford loans at a fixed 4% interest rate.

She says this would ease the debt burden of the average New York student who owes over $27,000 and faces a nearly doubling of the current interest rate to 6.8% in July.
