Gillibrand Asks EPA To Revisit Hudson Dredging Decision

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has become the latest public official from New York to call for additional dredging of the Hudson River.

The Environmental Protection Agency is now reviewing the effectiveness of a six-year project by Boston-based General Electric to remove 2.75 million cubic yards of PCB-contaminated sediment under a federal Superfund project.

Gillibrand on Tuesday released a letter asking EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to reevaluate and reverse the decision to stop dredging because of lingering polychlorinated biphenyl hotspots in the upper river.

State officials last month challenged the cleanup's effectiveness, saying some 35 percent of the PCBs discharged from factories north of Albany weren't removed.

An EPA official says they share Gillibrand's commitment to a clean river and will respond to her directly.
