One historic tree in Clinton is no more. The famous Ginko Biloba Tree located in the former Great American parking lot was taken down a few weeks ago.

According to Facebook, The Historical Society had an arborist (a tree surgeon) take a look at it a few years ago and he concluded that the tree was too far gone and could not be saved. The tree was planted around 1850.

People on Facebook are completely upset:

Elizabeth Rudd Greene: I used to gaze at that tree in the fall 50 years ago from study hall on the 2nd floor of the high school. There was a halo as wide as the tree of perfect yellow golden leaves on the ground underneath. I will always have that memory. In summer it was a green goddess.

Sally Emery: So many memories under/in/around that tree. Used to walk by it every day on our way uptown through the woods.

Carrie Burns Evans: My dad was instrumental in keeping that tree when the parking lot was first put in. Very sad. We did notice just last week that it was not healthy. Sorry to see it go...
