SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a 16-year-old girl is hospitalized after she was shot in the back while walking with her boyfriend on a Syracuse street.

Authorities say officers responded around 11:30 p.m. Monday to reports of a shooting on Shirley Drive. When they arrived at the scene they found a teen suffering from a gunshot wound to her back.

She was taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of wounds that police say aren't considered life-threatening.

Police say the teen told officers that she was walking with her boyfriend when she was shot. She then walked to her friend's house to request an ambulance.

Police say their investigation is continuing.
