Good Samaritans Credited with Keeping Overturned Car from Sinking into Water

Good Samaritans are being credited with keeping an overturned car from rolling into the water and saving the lives of its occupants following an accident on Sunday.

A father and daughter were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica, New York in serious condition after their 2001 Saturn was rear-ended by a 2002 Chevy pickup truck on March 29, 2015.

The driver, 87-year-old Stanley J. Zombick of Clinton, and his passenger, 58-year-old Maureen C. Zombick of Shuyler, were attempting to pull into the driveway of their residence off of Route 5 in Westmoreland when the truck driven by an 18-year-old driver from Munnsville allegedly hit their car, forcing it off of the road and into a ditch.  The ditch contained running water.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says that an unidentified witness told deputies that several motorists stopped to help and roll the overturned car onto its side to keep the Zombicks from being submerged in the water.  Those who stopped are being credited as Good Samaritans, whom authorities say left the scene when emergency responders arrived.

Authorities say that the driver of the pickup truck did not appear to have any physical injuries as a result of the accident.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted on the scene by the New York State Police, Westmoreland Fire Department, and Central Oneida County Ambulance Service.

As of this posting no update is available on the conditions of Stanley and Maureen Zombick.
