Inspection teams have finished another round of oil tank car and railroad inspections across New York State.

Governor Cuomo announced Tuesday that in an effort to reduce the dangers of transporting crude oil across the state, 109 oil cars, 196 miles of track and 72 switches were inspected for defects.

In all, state and federal inspection teams discovered and repaired three critical defects and 41 non-critical defects.

Here in Central New York, Federal Administration track inspectors looked at two miles of track and 15 switches along the CSX mainline between Rome and Oneida. Only one critical defect was found - a chipped tread portion of a switch device - and that was immediately repaired.

They also found five non-critical defects including loose switch rod bolts and loose bolts at a switch transition device.

After a series of out-of-state accidents involving the transport of crude oil on the railroads, New York State has taken action to increase the safety and reliability of rail transport.

Governor Cuomo has also begun the process of hiring five new Department of Transportation rail safety inspectors, which has allowed the DOT to increase its capacity to perform rail inspections across the state.
