Albany, NY (WIBX) - Following the death of Linda Turner, at the hands of paroled sex offender Robert Blainey, two new pieces of legislation passed into law will toughen rules for repeat sex offenders.

One of the bills sponsored by State Senator Joe Griffo and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi requires officials to keep up-to-date photos of violent sex offenders on file, in the event the person tries to change their appearance.

The other requires the State Office of Mental Health to review transcripts from parole interviews with violent offenders, before releasing them.

Brindisi says the legislation is aimed at keeping as many people safe as possible.

"There were some flaws in the system," Brindisi said. "What Senator Griffo and I wanted to do was address some issues and make sure that information was exchanged between agencies, and make sure that law enforcement has updated photographs of level three sex offenders if they decide to skirt their parole requirements."

Governor Cuomo signed off on both bills, which will become state law in 30 days.
