Albany, NY (WIBX) - Governor Cuomo has activated nearly 1,000 National Guard and emergency personnel to help out with the New York City area's storm cleanup, that according to National Guard Captain Steve Keblish of Herkimer.

Captain Keblish along with other members of the National Guard will ride out the storm at the Farmingdale Armed Forces Reserve Center on Long Island, then once the storm has passed, will commence with recovery operations. "We've got a plan to pretty much stay undercover until the storm passes, then we will be working to see where we are needed and do as much 'good' as possible", Kelbish said in an interview early Saturday morning.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Hurricane Irene has made landfall, touching down near Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Irene's maximum sustained winds have decreased slightly, to 90 miles an hour, yet the Category One Hurricane remains a dangerous storm system.
