BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A grandmother and her 17-month-old grandson were fatally shot outside their Buffalo home after celebrating her birthday with family at a nearby park.

Police say Yvette and Kyrie Johnson were on the porch around 12:30 a.m. Monday when several suspects approached and gunfire erupted.

Two men on the porch suffered leg wound. They were treated at a hospital and released.

Yvette Johnson's family says she turned 54 on Sunday and celebrated with a picnic in Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Buffalo Police Capt. Jeff Rinaldo called it a "horrific, horrific crime" and said the department's entire homicide unit was working "relentlessly until we bring somebody to justice."

Mayor Byron Brown said the killings were "heartbreaking" and urged anyone with information on the suspects to call a confidential police tip line.
