Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation co-sponsored by Senator Joseph Griffo that will allow veterans to purchase additional state pension credits.

Now, any veteran working in the public sector with at least five years of credit in the state pension system can buy three years of credit for their military service.

Previously under state law, the pension credits could only be received by veterans who served in certain conflicts, like World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War.

Griffo says the measure had been vetoed twice by the Governor, so he's pleased to finally see the bill enacted to ensure all veterans are recognized for their active service.

He says the legislation will encourage veterans to continue their public service in careers like teachers, firefighters, police officers or state employees.
