Students at Rome's Staley Elementary School got a "living civics lesson" on Friday.

Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon held a joint swearing-in ceremony before students and staff.

“I believe that civic engagement is an important value that should be instilled at a young age,” Griffo said. “By bringing this ceremony to Staley Elementary School today, students can see how the process works and have the opportunity to ask questions about our job and how it impacts their lives. I am honored the people of the 47th Senate District elected me, and it is a pleasure to share this moment with our children.”

Family Court Judge Randal Caldwell administered the oath of office.

Students also had the chance to speak and interact with the Senator and Assemblywoman.

Griffo was re-elected to the 47th State Senate District seat in November.  Buttenschon is serving her first term in the Assembly, representing the 119th District.
